Picture of me and William during National Breastfeeding Week
Breast pads
At first, I never really thought I would need these, and for the longest time I was using maxi pads and occasionally had to steal one of my son’s diapers LOL. I came to find out the best thing for leaking boobies is having nursing pads! I usually keep about 3 sets of pads in my bag so that is 6 pads in total. I love the Mandela nursing pads, they can be bought at any store that sells their products, I get mine at Walmart.
Nipple Cream
The first few weeks your body is going through a lot of changes and if your breast feeding, it takes a tole on your nipples. Not only do I use nipple cream to cure my chapped nipples, I also use it as a lube for my pump flanges. I love using The First Years Nursing Care Nipple Butter, it can be found at Walmart as well. The reason I love this nipple cream so much is that it is lanolin free and is all natural so its 100% safe for baby to ingest.
Pumping bra
It is super annoying to have to hold the pumps for 15-20 mins and being a mom we have to be able to multitask. Investing in a nursing bra was such a smart move on my half and was totally worth the $10. I use Secret Treasures Intimates pumping bra, I also got this at Walmart.
Haakaa
For mothers who don’t know what a haakaa is, it is a silicone manual breast pump. I got a set of these my first week home from the hospital and it was a life saver! No only do they not require an outlet but they also are super easy to use for catching your let down from the other breast while your nursing. I found these pumps on Amazon.com and they are worth every penny!
Breast pump
Of course, this is a pumping bag so it would be a no brainer to have a breast pump on the list. Thankfully most breast pumps have a car adapter that you can buy or have a place for batteries, for when your on the go. I use the Mandela pump and it came with a battery pack.
· On a side note pack extra batteries if you use the battery pack. Batteries don’t seem to last more than 10 pumping sessions.
Nursing cover
This is completely optional but I’m still slightly uncomfortable nursing my son in front of others. It’s not too often I use mine because I always carry pumped bottles with me, but you never know if your baby is going to be super hungry and eat all your supply. My cover is for emergencies.
Extra Nursing Clothing
Babies are super unpredictable and so are your boobs, you never know when you will spring a massive leak or you little on spits up on you.
Breast Milk Storage Bag
You must have a place to put your liquid gold once you pump it. I use the Mandela storage baggies that you can get at Walmart. If you don’t use baggies, I also use a glass bottle. If you have something to store your milk, then your golden.
Cooler
Being able to keep your milk cold is import, you don’t want to waste your milk just because your on the road. My diaper bag, like most other, have a cooler section. I also keep a ice pack in there as well for long trips.
