Breast Feeding Problems and Solutions

Williams first latch


Latching Pain


· Have your baby’s mouth cover more of your areola from below the nipple rather than above.


Low Milk Supply


· Nurse and pump as often as possible.


· Hand express till empty after every pump or feeding session.


Engorgement


· Breastfeed and nurse more often


· Hand express before you nurse to get flow

Cracked Nipples


· Nurse more often but at shorter intervals.


· Moisten your nipples after nursing with breastmilk or nipple balm


Painful Let Down


· Check for infection.


· Feed baby on the same side for a whole session. Only switch breast if necessary.


Mastitis


· Go see a doctor right away! The sooner you receive antibiotics the easier it is to treat.


· Get plenty of rest.


· Stay hydrated


· NURSE,NURSE,NURSE! Nursing your baby along with pumping as much as possible will allow you to empty your breast.


· Make sure your breasts are empty!


· Massage the breast and apply warm or cold compresses.

Clogged Ducts


· Warm compresses.


· Massage the breast.


· Warm shower.


· Plenty of rest.


· NURSE and Pump.


Thrush


· See your doctor for antifungal medication.

Sleeping Baby at the Breast


· Stimulate baby by burping, switching breast, and tickling.


· Nurse on the fuller breast for more efficacy.
